A inside look into one of Oahu’s most beautiful, expensive and diverse zip codes.
History of Hawaii Kai
Formerly known as Kuapa pond, Hawaii Kai was once the largest native Hawaiian fishpond on Oahu. Kuapa pond spanned from Kuli’ou’ou to Portlock and was used to raise Mullet (‘Awa’Awa) as well as hosting a wide variety of indigenous water birds. In 1961, Henry Kaiser entered into a long term land lease with Bishop Estates that allowed him to develop a large part of East Oahu (521 acres) into residential and commercial properties. This mass development has turned Hawaii Kai into the flourishing community we know and love today.
